Use of Funds

Funds are to used to enhance the curriculum and actively engage students in meaningful learning experiences. Grants may be used to purchase books, videos, CDs, DVDs, computer software and hardware, and any other educational resources to be owned, used, and distributed to a K-12 school in California, Nevada, and New York. Grant checks will be made payable to the school and designated for the stated use in the application.

Funds must be expended by December 31, 2012 and projects must be completed by the end of the 2012-2013 school year.

Eligibility and Requirements

Teachers may apply individually for grants of up to $500, or collaborate with other teachers in their school and submit a joint application. Individual teachers may not apply for multiple grants and cannot be involved with multiple teams. Please note the following requirements:

  • The school principal or administrator must understand and fully support the project, as evidenced by signing the statement of support on the application form and final grant agreement.
  • Project goals and learning objectives are clearly defined and tied to students' academic needs. The expected impact on student performance is described for all participants.
  • If a field trip is involved, well-planned pre and post-trip activities are connected to classroom learning objectives.

Teachers, librarians, school media specialists, and administrators may apply if they work fulltime at K-12 schools in the following 16 counties of California, Nevada, and New York:

  • Alameda County
  • Carson City County
  • Clark County
  • Contra Costa County
  • Douglas County
  • Los Angeles County
  • Orange County
  • Riverside County
  • San Bernardino County
  • San Diego County
  • San Francisco County
  • San Mateo County
  • Santa Clara County
  • Ventura County
  • Washoe County
  • New York

To ensure that grants are distributed to a wide range of geographically diverse schools across targeted districts, multiple grants are not likely to be awarded to the same school. However, applicants may apply individually or as part of a team. Teams must be from the same school.

Review and Award Process

A committee comprising of City National Bank colleagues will review all applications. Geographic distribution and Title 1 status of recipients may be considered.

Reporting Requirements

Final reports will be required for all grants and must be completed by June 30, 2013. The final report should consist of a two-page narrative report, including a summary of the students' accomplishments and an expense report. Submitting a few photos or samples of student work documenting the project is highly encouraged. Teachers who have been previously funded by a literacy grant and have failed to submit their final report by the application deadline will automatically disqualify their school from consideration.
